Why was her surgery recovery time shorter?

I'd like to have gastric byp surgery but am very very nervous. My mother had it and was hospitalized for a month. A coworker had it done however and was back at work in 4 days. She's on vacation so I havent been able to find out why her's was done so quickly. Does anyone know?
