I have a 97 Ford Taurus with a 6 CD Changer that died - Could it be a fuse thing?

I was driving along and the CD player made a high-pitched sound then died. I have unplugged it from the side. It is located in my trunk and there was a slight smell when I checked to see what was happening. When it is plugged in, it has no power so the cartridge will not eject. The car recently had an intermitent starter issue that blew the battery, could it have damaged the CD player as well? I have since had the starter replaced and everything seemed to be working fine until the high pitched noise. I can get another one on Ebay if its the whole player that's damaged. Any ideas?
